Imam Mahdi

From WikiAhmadiyya, the free encyclopedia on Islam and Ahmadiyyat

The Imam Mahdi is the Islamic reformer whose advent was foretold by the prophet of Islam, Muhammadsa. He is still awaited and expected by Muslims of the Sunni and Shia sects, while Ahmadis believe the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad was the Imam Mahdi.

Concept of Imam Mahdi in the Quran

On more than one occasion, the Quran refers to previous prophets 'Aimatan Yahdoona' - the Arabic pluralisation of 'Imam Mahdi', in other words declaring the previous prophets were 'Imam Mahdis' (Quran 21:74, Quran 32:25)

Identity of the Imam Mahdi

In several traditions, Muhammadsa stated the promised Imam would be none other than Jesus:

The only Mahdi is Jesus son of Mary.

- Ibn Majah

Whosoever lives from among you shall meet Jesus, son of Mary who is Imam Mahdi.

- Ibn Hanbal

Allah's Messengersa said "How will you be when the son of Mary (i.e. Jesus) descends among you and your imam is among you..

- Bukhari

Ahmadis believe these prophecies are metaphors referring to the person of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad

Signs of the Imam Mahdi

Modern Technology

In the time of the Mahdi, a Muslim in the East will be able to see his Muslim brother in the West, and he in the West will see him in the East.

Bihar ul Anwar

During Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad's lifetime, his image was published in distant newspapers in far off western lands.

End Times

At the end of the time of my community the Mahdi will appear.

Al Hakim

Ahmadis believe numerous signs of the end times in which the Mahdi was to appear have occurred. For example, the Quranic prophecy of the reunion of the Jewish nation - previously dispersed across the world - in Israel (which occurred in the 1940s):

We said to the children of Israel, ‘Dwell ye in the land; and when the time of the promise of the latter days comes, We shall bring you together out of various peoples.’

Quran 112:2-5

Eclipses

Main article: Sign of the Eclipses

Muhammadsa foretold a solar and a lunar eclipse would occur on particular days of Ramadan as a sign for the Imam Mahdi. These occurred in Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad's hometown three years after he first made his claim.

Religious Significance of the Imam Mahdi

When you see them, then pledge your allegiance to them even if you have to crawl over the snow, for that is the caliph of Allah, Mahdi.

- Ibn Majah

One who obeyed Imam Mahdi obeyed me, one who disobeyed him disobeyed me.

- Biharul Anwaar

He who dies in a condition that he has not recognized the Imam of the age dies a death of ignorance.

Ibn Hanbal

Narrated Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman: The people used to ask Allah's Messengersa about the good but I used to ask him about the evil lest I should be overtaken by them. So I said: "O Allah's Messengersa! We were living in ignorance and in an (extremely) worst atmosphere, then Allah brought to us this good (i.e., Islam); will there be any evil after this good?" He said: "Yes." I said: 'Will there be any good after that evil?" He replied: "Yes, but it will be tainted (not pure.)'' I asked, "What will be its taint?" He replied, "(There will be) some people who will guide others not according to my tradition? You will approve of some of their deeds and disapprove of some others." I asked: "Will there be any evil after that good?" He replied: "Yes, (there will be) some people calling at the gates of the (Hell) Fire, and whoever will respond to their call, will be thrown by them into the (Hell) Fire." I said, "O Allah s Apostle! Will you describe them to us?" He said: "They will be from our own people and will speak our language." I said: "What do you order me to do if such a state should take place in my life?" He said, "Stick to the Jamaat of Muslims and their Imam."
